Unraveling the Mysteries of Cosmic Object Formation: Insights from the Backyard Worlds Project

J. Davy Kirkpatrick, the lead author of a recent study published in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, has uncovered some fascinating details about the cosmic objects within a 65 light-year radius from the Sun. Using data from the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project, Kirkpatrick and his team found over 4,000 cosmic objects in this region.

One of the most intriguing findings is that there are four times more stars than brown dwarfs in this area. Despite this, low-mass objects are actually more prevalent than high-mass ones, with an average mass of just 40 percent of that of the Sun. This suggests that while stars and brown dwarfs are both formed through similar processes, there may be differences in how they develop.

Kirkpatrick notes that there is something significant about the star formation process hidden in the data. Brown dwarfs, which are neither stars nor planets but somewhere in between, are generally more massive than Jupiter but do not fuse hydrogen in their cores like lower-mass stars do. The study suggests that the formation process for brown dwarfs differs from that of higher mass stars, indicating that there may be different factors at play in determining the type of object formed.

The involvement of citizen scientists in the Backyard Worlds project accelerated the process of identifying objects in the census by 10 to 15 years compared to if researchers had undertaken the task alone. Through this project, volunteers analyzed image sets to identify objects within the vicinity of our Sun in the galaxy, looking for movement relative to the background.

Overall, this study sheds light on some fascinating insights into cosmic object formation and characteristics within a specific radius around our Sun. It also highlights how citizen science projects can help speed up scientific discovery by allowing researchers to tap into a large pool of volunteer expertise and analysis skills.
