Curiosity’s First Sol: Capturing 3D Images of Rough Rock Surfaces and Conducting Contact Science on High-Altitude Targets
Our plan for the first sol involves conducting remote science activities, including capturing images with ChemCam and Mastcam. ChemCam is currently capturing LIBS mosaics of two different blocks, “May Lake” and “Pavilion Dome,” as well as a 3×3 RMI mosaic of a group of dark pyramidal blocks in the distance. Meanwhile, Mastcam is taking large mosaics of targets on Pinnacle Ridge and “Sharktooth Peak.”
After a brief break, Curiosity will begin conducting contact science on the Bilko Pinnacle target. This target presents challenges due to its height, steep sides, and rough surface, making it impossible to brush. To create high-quality 3D images of the rock, MAHLI is taking images from various orientations along with a standard 5cm stereo pair and a 2cm close approach. Additionally, a second contact science target, “Pipsqueak Spire,” will be analyzed using 20cm and 5cm stereo pairs.
Before stowing the arm for the day, nighttime APXS observations are planned for both targets. Following the completion of these activities, a CheMin analysis will be conducted on an internal calibration standard to monitor performance.
