Quantum Field Theory Expert Kenneth Intriligator Inducted into American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Kenneth Intriligator is a distinguished professor of Physics who holds the Broida Chair. He completed his undergraduate studies at UC San Diego, where he was awarded the S.K. Ma Memorial Prize in Physics. Intriligator obtained his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Harvard University and conducted his postdoctoral research at Rutgers University. He also spent time as a long-term member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.
Intriligator’s research focuses on the theory of quantum fields, particularly developing symmetry-based methods to explore new aspects of quantum fields and their connections with mathematics. He has been recognized as a Simons Investigator and serves as a co-principal investigator of the Simons Collaboration on Global Categorical Symmetry. Intriligator finds the concept of humans being ripples on an ocean of quantum fields that fill all of spacetime fascinating, which refers to the belief that all matter and interactions, including people, are analogous to waves on this quantum “ocean.” More information about quantum field theory and Intriligator’s research can be found in a recorded talk he delivered at the Aspen Physics Center.
