Langley students present projects at regional Science Fair in video format

Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in Fraser Valley schools were chosen to showcase their best science fair projects at the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair held at the University of the Fraser Valley. The event featured students from Langley, Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, and Hope presenting a total of 116 projects to the public and judges. Participants had the opportunity to win cash prizes and awards, with students in Grades 7 to 12 having the chance to represent Team BC at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa.

One enthusiastic Grade 5 student, Avneet Singh Sandhu from Dasmesh Punjabi School, expressed excitement about the event and his project on plant photosynthesis. Projects varied in topics from global warming to mental health and even a 3-D printer. At Dasmesh Punjabi School, students participated in a selection process where five projects from each class were initially chosen, then narrowed down to three to be presented at the regional science fair.

For Grade 4 student Gurnihaal Singh Bains, making it through the initial selection process was unexpected but rewarding. The event aimed to inspire students’ imagination and love for science, which was evident in the projects presented by Grade 8 students Japandeep Gill and Metaab Khangura. Khangura’s project, inspired by a missed flight at the airport, developed a sensor for drivers to locate parking spots easily in busy lots and find their vehicles upon return.

The students, including Gill and Khangura, eagerly anticipated the results of the competition and looked forward to the awards ceremony on April 17. Their innovative projects demonstrated the creativity and dedication of young scientists from Fraser Valley schools.
