May 25th Declared as the Official Day for Soccer Fans to Celebrate the World’s Most Popular Sport

Uniting the World: The Power of Football on May 25th

On May 25th every year, soccer fans around the world will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first international soccer tournament in history. This date marks a significant milestone in the history of football, as it was during the 1924 summer Olympic games in Paris that the first tournament took place. The resolution to establish World Football Day was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations with overwhelming support from over 160 countries.

The day is intended to recognize soccer as a game that transcends national, cultural, and socio-economic boundaries, and is played and followed globally. In introducing the resolution, Libya’s U.N. Ambassador emphasized the significance of soccer as a universal language that promotes mutual understanding, tolerance, respect, and solidarity.

FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, as well as regional and national soccer federations play an important role in promoting the game. The resolution encourages all nations, U.N. bodies, international organizations, academia, civil society, and the private sector to observe World Football Day and raise awareness about the benefits of soccer for all through educational and public engagement activities.

As we celebrate this special occasion on May 25th each year, let us take a moment to appreciate the impact that soccer has had on our world and continue to promote its values of unity, equality, and respect for all people regardless of their background or beliefs.
