UNESCO Honors Brave Palestinian Journalists Covering Gaza Conflict
The UNESCO Prize was awarded to Palestinian journalists covering events in Gaza during the World Press Freedom Conference held in Santiago on May 2nd. The ceremony recognized the bravery and commitment of these journalists who work under difficult circumstances in conflict zones. The prize, established in memory of Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano, was not mentioned in the official press release from the event, which was reported on the official UN website.
Mauricio Weibel, chairman of the international jury, introduced the laureates and expressed solidarity and recognition for their work. He acknowledged the deaths of media workers in Gaza, with UNESCO reporting that 26 journalists were killed while on duty after October 7. During the conference, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay emphasized the importance of collective action to ensure that journalists around the world can continue their work of reporting and investigating facts at the awards ceremony.
The event demonstrated once again the ongoing challenges faced by journalists in conflict zones and highlighted the need for continued efforts to support them in their work. It served as a reminder of the vital role that journalists play in keeping the public informed and promoting freedom of expression.
