Different Perspectives on the Business Impacts of Hennepin Avenue Construction

Rising from the Rubble: How Reconstruction is Boosting Businesses in Minneapolis’ Uptown Area

In the heart of Minneapolis, construction crews are working tirelessly on a massive reconstruction project that has greatly impacted the Uptown area. Amidst the machinery, dirt, and dust, Robert Sorenson, owner of Bobby Beads, is closely monitoring the progress as he navigates through the chaos. Although he has never experienced a reconstruction project of this magnitude before, he is relieved that the impact on his business has not been as severe as he initially feared.

Despite the challenges posed by the construction disruptions, Sorenson has noticed an unexpected increase in business. Customer foot traffic varies depending on the day and weather conditions, with some customers walking several blocks to reach his store. This inconvenience highlights the difficulties faced by businesses in Uptown during this time.

Just a few blocks away at La Bodega Taco Bar, owner Alex Rosario is also facing challenges with sales dropping by half compared to before the construction began. He also mentions that delivery drivers often cancel orders due to the difficulty in navigating through the construction zone. Rosario expresses frustration at how this project is negatively affecting businesses in Uptown.

However, Dale Lee, owner of Uncommon Grounds Coffee House, shares a different perspective. Despite experiencing some temporary inconveniences caused by the construction disruptions, Lee views these difficulties as necessary for long-term benefits for both his business and the neighborhood as a whole. He envisions a modern and improved area once the project is completed.

As this current phase of construction progresses towards completion, plans are already being put into place for further work to be done to Hennepin Avenue between 26th and Douglas Ave starting in 2025. Despite facing challenges during this time period due to construction disruptions many business owners remain hopeful for a revitalized neighborhood once it’s all said and done.

As Sorenson puts it “It’s been challenging but we are managing and keeping our heads up because we know it will be worth it in the end.”
