Libyan Parliament Prepares for 2024 Elections

Libya Prepares for Simultaneous Presidential and Legislative Elections: A Giant Step Towards Democracy

In recent developments, the Speaker of Libya’s House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, has announced that simultaneous presidential and legislative elections will take place before the end of the year. During a speech at the Arab Parliament meetings in Cairo, Saleh emphasized that Libya is ready for elections and called on the international community for support.

Saleh highlighted that the necessary laws for electing the president and parliament have been passed, and there is a mechanism in place for choosing the prime minister. He urged foreign countries to provide encouragement for the electoral process.

While some individuals in Libya are reluctant to give up power, Saleh acknowledged their concerns and stated that discussions are ongoing with the State Council to establish a plan for forming the government. An agreement has been reached where candidates must be recommended by a group consisting of members from both the State Council and House of Representatives before being approved by the House of Representatives.

Saleh’s announcement underscores progress towards organizing free and fair elections in Libya. The cooperation between various political bodies within the country shows a commitment to democratic principles and a desire for peaceful transition of power. By engaging with international community, Libya hopes to receive necessary resources and support to conduct successful elections and move forward towards stability and prosperity.
