German Navy Set to Purchase Hermes 900 UAVs from Elbit in Collaboration with Lufthansa Technik

The German Navy has expressed interest in purchasing the Hermes 900 UAV produced by Elbit, as reported by Israel Defense. A spokesman for German airline Lufthansa has announced a collaboration with Elbit Systems through its subsidiary Lufthansa Technik on military drones. However, Elbit has declined to comment on the matter. In January 2023, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Lufthansa Technik and Elbit Systems, but there is no official contract in place yet.

Lufthansa Technik will handle maintenance and crew training for the supply of eight Hermes 900 StarLiner UAVs to the German Navy, while Elbit will be responsible for producing the UAVs. This project marks the first UAV maintenance endeavor for Lufthansa Technik, which has previously provided support for NATO aircraft fleets including F-35 fighter jets, Chinook transport helicopters, and Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft. The specific cost of the contract has not been disclosed.
