Expanding Healthcare Access: UM Health’s New Multi-Specialty Facility in Troy, Michigan

The University of Michigan Health has announced plans to purchase 7.28 acres of vacant land at the former Kmart Corp. headquarters in Troy, Michigan. This move will enable the university to build a multi-specialty facility on the property and expand its clinical services in Oakland County, providing greater access to patients.

Dr. Marschall Runge, CEO of Michigan Medicine, expressed his excitement about the university’s plans to establish a long-term presence in Oakland County and offer world-class care close to home for Michiganders. The new facility will focus on advanced specialty and diagnostic services as part of a broader effort to increase U of M Health’s presence in southeast Michigan. Dr. David Miller, president of U-M Health, highlighted that the center will include a clinical program for multidisciplinary cancer care.

In addition to being an important step towards expanding clinical services and increasing patient access, the building will also adhere to university guidelines for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) in order to minimize environmental impacts. This commitment demonstrates the university’s dedication towards sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.

The former Kmart Corp. headquarters opened in the early 1970s but has been vacant since 2006 when Kmart merged with Sears Holdings Corp., moved operations to Sears headquarters in suburban Chicago, and began demolition last year with funding from Forbes/Frankel Troy Ventures LLC. The demolition costs were paid by Forbes/Frankel Troy Ventures LLC who also funded the demolition of the building and parking structure at 3100 W Big Beaver at Coolidge Highway earlier this year.
