The largest project to regenerate coastal regions on Earth

Dubai’s Mangrove Dream: A Ambitious Development Plan to Absorb CO2 and Protect Coastal Ecosystems

The ambitious Dubai Mangroves project is a large-scale initiative aimed at transforming the city’s coastal area with giant mangrove forests. This ambitious development plan, backed by Dubai-based company Urb, aims to prevent erosion, flooding, and reduce CO2 emissions in the city. The project involves planting over 100 million mangrove trees, which will help protect the city from erosion, rising sea levels, and support marine life.

Urb is known for its other large-scale initiatives such as an air-conditioned cycling track and the largest coral reef regeneration project. The heart of this project lies in the exceptional abilities of mangrove trees to absorb CO2, prevent erosion, and support marine life. The Dubai Mangroves project aims to absorb 1.23 million tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to emissions from over 260,000 gasoline-powered vehicles.

While planting such a large number of trees will take many years, Urb plans to use AI-powered drones and satellite photography to monitor and promote the growth of mangrove trees. In addition to planting trees, the project will include small beaches, social spaces, walkways, a visitor education center, botanical museum, and nature research center. Currently in the design phase, Urb has selected 6 pilot studies to demonstrate the feasibility of the project’s goals.

The Dubai Mangroves project will play a crucial role in helping the city cope with climate change by reducing carbon emissions and protecting coastal ecosystems from erosion and rising sea levels.
