Breaking the Stigma: Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls School Districts Support Students’ Mental Health During Awareness Month

During Mental Health Awareness Month, the Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls School Districts are taking steps to support students in need of mental health resources. Jamie Ganski, Director of Mental Health and Resiliency, emphasizes the importance of promoting positive mental health habits such as spending time outdoors, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, surrounding oneself with positive relationships, being in nature and having a positive role model in life. These healthy behaviors can greatly impact a student’s mental well-being.

Ganski highlights the signs to look for in a student who may be struggling with their mental health, including absenteeism, frustration or difficulty focusing on schoolwork. By providing the necessary mental health support, students can improve academically as they are better able to concentrate and engage in the classroom.

Kaying Xiong, Executive Director of Student and Special Education for the Eau Claire School District stresses that mental health issues are not inherently negative and that seeking help is essential for individuals experiencing challenges. By raising awareness and removing the stigma surrounding mental health, people can change their perceptions and approach to addressing mental well-being.

Xiong emphasizes that mental health is a journey and that communities and schools play a vital role in normalizing discussions about mental health.
