UNM Newsroom: College of Education & Human Sciences Receives Recognition in State-Sponsored Review

UNM’s College of Education and Human Sciences Excels in Science of Reading: Inspection Praises Program for its Impact on Literacy Outcomes

In recent news, UNM’s College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS) welcomed two Teacher Preparation Inspection evaluators (TPI-US) to assess the effectiveness of its teacher preparation programs in supporting literacy outcomes for New Mexican students. The TPI inspectors spent multiple days observing teacher candidates, interviewing mentor teachers, reviewing syllabi, and attending science of reading classes in April.

During their visit, the inspectors evaluated the college’s work in three main areas: instruction of the science of reading, teacher candidates’ literacy instruction in field sites, and community and district partnerships. They praised COEHS for being a “trailblazer” in teaching the science of reading to teacher candidates, noting that the level of implementation was rare across the country.

Initial results suggest that COEHS’s teacher preparation programs include rigorous evidence-based coursework, supervised field experiences, and strong partnerships with schools. TPI inspectors shared their preliminary findings on April 26, commending the college for its significant impact on promoting literacy in public schools and schools on reservations. They also noted that COEHS has a strong institution and program that greatly influences schools.

The TPI inspectors will be back next academic year for a second site visit, with a formal written evaluation expected from the site visitors in the months to come. The college’s commitment to structured literacy and evidence-based practices has been recognized by the state-sponsored review, highlighting its dedication to improving literacy outcomes for New Mexican students.
