UM Health purchasing former Kmart headquarters in Metro Detroit for $4.4M with plans for expansion

U-M Health System Set to Expand in Troy with Multi-Specialty Facility Purchase

The University of Michigan Health system is set to purchase vacant land at the former Kmart headquarters in Troy to build a multi-specialty facility. The property, located at 3100 West Big Beaver Road, spans 7.8 acres and is being purchased for $4.42 million from Forbes/Frankel Troy Ventures LLC. Pending approval from the University of Michigan Board of Regents, the purchase is expected to move forward at the upcoming meeting.

The new facility will focus on advanced specialty and diagnostic services, aiming to expand specialty clinical services and patient access in Oakland County. Michigan Medicine’s CEO, Marschall Runge, stated that this investment is just the beginning of a broader presence in southeast Michigan, with plans to create a network of care that allows easy access to world-class healthcare for residents statewide.

The former Kmart headquarters has remained vacant for over 15 years and was set for demolition last fall. The University of Michigan Health system’s purchase is seen as a way to bring their expertise to a new community of patients, offering easier access to their innovative clinical programs, including multi-disciplinary cancer care. David Miller, the president of U-M Health, expressed excitement about the expansion into Troy, anticipating the new facility’s role in bringing advanced and innovative clinical programs to the region.

In recent years, there has been a growing demand for specialized medical care in Southeast Michigan. As a result, many healthcare providers have been expanding their offerings to meet this need. However, there remains a significant gap in access to specialized care in Oakland County specifically.

The new facility will address this gap by offering cutting-edge clinical services such as multi-disciplinary cancer care and other specialized treatments.

Marschall Runge explained that this investment is just the beginning of a broader presence in Southeast Michigan. He envisions creating a network of care that allows easy access to world-class healthcare for residents throughout the region.

David Miller shares this vision and expressed excitement about bringing U-M Health’s expertise to Troy.

“This expansion will allow us to bring our innovative clinical programs and top notch doctors closer to our patients,” said Miller.

Pending approval from the board of regents, construction on the new facility is expected to begin soon.
