The Rise of Emotional Intelligence: Meet Tong Tong, the AI-Powered Humanoid Robot that Learns and Improves Through Interactions with Humans
In Beijing last January, the Frontiers of General Artificial Intelligence Technology conference unveiled Tong Tong, a humanoid robot developed by the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence (BIGAI). Tong Tong, which means “little girl” in Chinese, is the first AI-powered robot that emulates the behavior of a three to four-year-old child. The researchers behind her claim that she can learn and improve through interactions with humans, showing a level of emotional engagement never seen before in AI models. She can identify and express emotions like happiness, anger, and sadness, responding appropriately to others’ emotions.
Tong Tong was created using the TongOS2.AGI operating system and the TONGOL2.0 language learning program. BIGAI director Zhu Shongchun explained that she has a mindset and value system similar to that of a young child. The project aims to advance artificial general intelligence by creating entities capable of understanding the real world and possessing a wide range of abilities.
Initially targeted at addressing loneliness in China, Tong Tong has the potential to be utilized in various fields such as home automation, healthcare, and education. Zhu emphasized the importance of general artificial intelligence as a powerful force in shaping new productive forces. The development of entities like Tong Tong represents a significant step in advancing AI technology to benefit society in different aspects of life.
