Councilors vow to delay City business until investigation is authorized

The Battle for Transparency: Mobile City Council’s Heated Discussion on Independent Investigation of Allegations Made by Paul Prine

During its weekly work session, the Mobile City Council was in heated discussions about an investigation into allegations made by Paul Prine against the administration. Council President C.J. Small, William Carroll, and Cory Penn threatened to hold up the entire agenda unless an independent investigation into these allegations was passed.

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson informed the council that the administration had conducted two “independent investigations” following the allegations by Prine. These investigations were carried out by Burr-Foreman Law firm and the City of Mobile’s Office of Professional Responsibility. Stimpson mentioned that the reports and supporting materials had been sent to the Alabama Attorney General’s Office for review, stating that there was no higher investigative authority in the state.

However, Carroll raised concerns about these investigations, arguing that they were controlled by the administration and did not meet their requirements for an independent review. He argued that these investigations were not thorough enough and did not address all of Prine’s allegations. Small and Penn agreed with Carroll’s concerns, stating that they would not support other items on the agenda until an independent investigation was passed.

Councilman Ben Reynolds stated that he would not support a vote on the investigation until they had thoroughly discussed the details, including the scope of any approved investigation. Reynolds argued that it was important to have a comprehensive review of all evidence before making any decisions regarding this issue.

In conclusion, there is disagreement among council members over whether or not to pass an independent investigation into allegations made by Paul Prine against the administration during their weekly work session. The council will need to carefully consider all evidence and arguments presented before making a decision on this matter.
