Team USA Prepares for IIHF World Championship with John Hynes in Charge
In Bratislava, Slovakia, Team USA held a 60-minute practice session today at Ondrej Nepala Arena. Head coach John Hynes, from the NHL’s Minnesota Wild, was in charge of the team’s operations. Assistant coaches Jack Capuano and Derek Lalonde oversaw the penalty kill and power play efforts, respectively. The coaching staff also included assistant coach Ty Hennes, goaltending coach Alex Westlund, and video coach Mike King.
Three of the players on the team were part of the 2019 U.S. Men’s National Team that competed in the IIHF Men’s World Championship held in Slovakia. Zach Werenski, Johnny Gaudreau, and Luke Kunin were all members of that team. John Hynes served as an assistant coach for that team as well. During their preliminary round games in Kosice, the team played well but eventually lost to Russia in the quarterfinals with a score of 4-3.
