Nantucket Current | The Fate of Our Economy and Community Rests in the Balance

Preserving Nantucket’s Economy and Community: A Call to Support Article 59 at the Upcoming Town Meeting on May 7

The future of Nantucket’s economy and community hangs in the balance at the upcoming Town Meeting on May 7, with Article 59 being a crucial decision. As someone deeply connected to Nantucket’s community, with multiple short-term rentals and an architectural firm on the island, I have seen firsthand the vital role that short-term rentals play in preserving our community. For many, including myself, short-term renting is not just a financial necessity but a lifeline that allows us to maintain properties we otherwise couldn’t afford.

As an investor in the well-being of our island, it is hard to believe that we would even consider allowing a few individuals to undermine our economy. The relationship between tourism and local businesses is significant, with short-term rental visitors supporting our shops and restaurants while contributing to the island’s workforce and connecting our community together.

However, those who want to restrict property owner rights pose a significant threat. We cannot let their interests jeopardize the livelihoods of many families and the very core of our community. Article 59 is not just about protecting short-term rentals but safeguarding the foundation of our island’s economy and financial stability for residents.

Tourism has been essential for Nantucket’s economy since the end of whaling, sustaining us for nearly two centuries. It is critical that we come together to support Article 59 to ensure continued prosperity for Nantucket for future generations. As Michele Kolb, I urge all Nantucket residents to vote YES on Article 59 at the Town Meeting on May 7. Our collective future is at stake, and we cannot afford to ignore high stakes.
