Pike County officials addressing a pressing mental health emergency.

Officials in eastern Kentucky are facing a serious “mental health crisis” as Pike County has seen an alarming increase in suicides over the past month. According to Tammy Riley, the Pike County Director of Public Health, at least 8 people have taken their own lives in the county in the last 30 days. This number is significant considering that the county had only 8 suicides in the entire year of 2023. Riley pointed out some common factors in these incidents, noting that all the suicides were committed by adults, primarily males ranging from their 30s to 80s, and were all done using firearms.

To address this concerning issue, various agencies are coming together to provide support and resources. The Mountain Comprehensive Care Center, which is the primary provider of mental health services for Pike County, is collaborating with the Pike County Coroner’s Office, the Judge Executive’s Office, and resources from the Kentucky Department of Public Health. Riley mentioned that the county is planning to host events in the near future to raise awareness about available resources for those in need of help.

In efforts to provide immediate assistance to individuals experiencing mental distress, Riley encouraged the use of the 9-8-8 crisis hot-line. This hotline can be accessed by calling or texting 988 at any time of the day, seven days a week, to speak to trained professionals who can offer support and guidance. By utilizing these resources, individuals can seek help and prevent further tragedies.
