Bronxdale hosts annual science fair for visually impaired students

Overcoming Visibility: How Blind Students in the Bronx Prove that Science Knows No Sight

Visually impaired students in the Bronx showcased their scientific discoveries at a special fair held on Thursday at the New York Institute for Special Education. This annual event was specifically designed for preschool to 12th-grade students who have been conducting research, collecting data, and building projects around topics such as solar energy, invisible ink, and slime since February. The theme of the fair was “chemical reaction,” and all displays were presented in braille.

Nestor Alfonso, an 11th-grade student, expressed his excitement about being able to participate in an event typically reserved for public school students despite his visual impairment. The opportunity to share their projects and discoveries was a unique and empowering experience for the students involved.

The fair provided a platform for visually impaired students to showcase their passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It was a testament to their determination, creativity, and commitment to learning despite facing challenges related to their disability. The event highlighted the importance of inclusivity and the acknowledgement that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can make valuable contributions to the field of science.

Through hands-on experiments, innovative projects, and engaging presentations, the students demonstrated their knowledge and skills in various scientific disciplines. The fair not only celebrated their achievements but also inspired them to continue pursuing their interests in science and exploring the world around them. It was a reminder that with determination and support, anything is possible even for those facing unique obstacles.

Overall, this event showcased the talent and dedication of visually impaired students in the Bronx who are passionate about science and committed to learning despite facing challenges related to their disability.
