New Rhode Island Health Director Takes the Reins: Dr. Staci Fischer Appointed as Acting Director”.

Gov. Dan McKee has appointed Dr. Staci Fischer as the acting director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, effective March 29th. Fischer will take over from interim state health director Dr. Utpala Bandy who is set to retire on that day. The search for a permanent health director is still ongoing, with the final stages of the hiring process underway.

Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott was the last person to hold the title of health director and stepped down in January 2022. Fischer currently serves as the chief administrative officer for the Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline and has been with the health department since July 2023. She has a strong background in medicine, having practiced at Rhode Island Hospital for 15 years and overseeing training for medical residents and fellows for Lifespan Corporation. Her resume is filled with awards, publications, and various leadership positions within the medical community.

Fischer holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Tulane University and a doctorate in medicine from Louisiana State University School of Medicine. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new role as acting health director, including a proposed salary increase to $250,000 effective in April (pending legislative approval). Gov. McKee believes that Fischer’s appointment will allow for a smooth transition as the state continues to search for a permanent health director while ensuring continuity of care during this time of uncertainty.

The governor also highlighted Fischer’s strong background in public health, which he believes will be an asset in leading the department through its ongoing challenges related to COVID-19 pandemic response, vaccine distribution, and healthcare reform efforts.

Fischer expressed her gratitude to Gov. McKee for this opportunity to serve as acting director of RIDOH and thanked her colleagues at Lifespan Corporation for their support during her tenure there.

Overall, Dr. Staci Fischer’s appointment as acting director marks an important milestone in RIDOH’s journey towards finding its next permanent leader while ensuring continued quality care for Rhode Islanders during this critical time period.
