Northbrook Junior High School Shines at State Science Fair

NBJH Students Bring Home 23 Awards from Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Fair

A group of Northbrook Junior High School students recently returned home from a state science fair with impressive results. The independent science research students, made up of seventh and eighth graders, brought home a total of 23 awards from the Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Fair in Decatur. Their hard work and dedication to science paid off, as they impressed judges with their thoughtful questions and teamwork.

Each year, NBJH students participate in the science fair by enrolling in a semester-long course that allows them to explore their own research interests using the scientific method. Science teachers at the school guide the students through their projects, providing support and guidance along the way. Judging criteria for the fair includes evaluating the oral presentation, written work, and scientific method of the experiments based on the Illinois Jr. Academy of Science rubric. Students who receive silver or gold awards have the opportunity to advance to regional and state-level competitions.

In addition to the gold and silver awards, several students were also recognized with special awards at the fair. This included a variety of awards such as Exceptional Project in Category (EPIC) awards, Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge awards, and awards from the Illinois Soybean Association.
