Mountain State Business College’s Legacy: Celebrating its Impact on Our Community

The closure of Mountain State Business College has left many feeling saddened, but it is important to remember the school’s significant contribution to our community in the past. The recent article about the school reminded me of the many young men returning from military service who used their G.I. Bill benefits to attend Mountain State and study accounting and other business courses.

Similarly, young women from small towns and rural areas came to Parkersburg to learn typing and shorthand at the school. Some of them even stayed with local families in exchange for helping with childcare and household tasks. These graduates went on to hold leadership positions at banks, businesses, factories, and various agencies, making valuable contributions to the community and beyond.

Personally, I have fond memories of riding my bicycle around the beautiful red brick building of Mountain State College, listening to the sounds of typewriters in the typing class. It is important to recognize the impact and legacy of Mountain State College and its founder in shaping the lives and careers of many individuals in our region. Let us not forget about its glory days and its significant influence on our community.
