Funding Secured for New KSU Dairy Science Facility

Kansas State University Receives $36 Million for Dairy Industry Expansion through Innovation and Research

Kansas State University has received $36 million in funding and bonding authority to replace its outdated Dairy Science Unit. The goal is to double the size of the dairy industry in the state through innovation and research. Senator J.R. Claeys of Salina made the announcement, stating that matching funds from industry are required to reach the $40 million goal.

The current dairy facility at the university dates back to 1977 and is no longer practical for teaching students and conducting research using outdated methods. It also supports other programs at the university, including large-animal veterinary programs. Despite not being a priority for the university during this legislative session, leaders like Claeys and Representative Ken Rahjes fought for its replacement with support from organizations like Dairy Farmers of America.

Claeys emphasized the importance of innovation in Kansas agriculture, citing upcoming major cheese factory openings in western Kansas and the benefits of adding dairy production to the state’s agriculture portfolio rather than outsourcing commodities. The new facility will drive innovation and research for the dairy industry in Kansas, creating opportunities for students and faculty alike.
