Indiana High School Athletic Association Sanctions Girls Wrestling and Boys Volleyball as Official Sports

The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) has officially sanctioned two new high school sports on Monday – boys volleyball and girls wrestling. These sports are set to become part of the IHSAA calendar, with girls wrestling joining the winter sport slate and boys volleyball being a spring sport. Both sports have been working towards this moment for years and have seen significant growth during their time in the Emerging Sport Process.

Girls wrestling has had its own state tournament for the past seven years, thanks to the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association, while the Indiana Boys Volleyball Coaches Association has been hosting a state tournament in boys volleyball since 1994. Both sports have seen more than 1,400 wrestlers from 177 schools join girls wrestling and over 100 schools participating in boys volleyball during their time in the Emerging Sport Process.

Boys volleyball and girls wrestling are the first new sports to be fully recognized by the IHSAA in six years, with the last sport being unified flag football in 2018. The only other sport to be fully recognized by the IHSAA in this century was unified track and field in 2013, both of which are co-ed sports partnered with Special Olympics Indiana.
