Giants’ Catching Depth Taking a Hit: Injuries to Top Two Catchers and Veteran Backup Leave Team Tested
The Giants’ catching depth was already in question when they lost their top two catchers to injuries within 24 hours. Then, veteran backup catcher Tom Murphy sustained an injury in the second inning of their game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park. The game had a 70-minute rain delay, and when play resumed in a downpour at 7:15 p.m. ET, Murphy was injured.
It is unclear what injury Murphy sustained, but he expressed his frustration in the dugout by slamming his catcher’s gear. Blake Sabol, who was called up to take Patrick Bailey’s roster spot earlier that day, entered the game in Murphy’s place.
With Joey Bart no longer in the organization, the Giants’ catching depth will be tested if Murphy is out for an extended period. If Bailey is out too, 28-year-old minor league catcher Jakson Reetz may be the next in line to be called up by the Giants. The team will have to rely on their depth at the catching position to navigate through these injuries.
