Bob Avellini, former Bears quarterback, passes away at 70

Forever a Bear: The Life and Legacy of Robert ‘Bob’ Avellini

On Saturday, the Chicago Bears lost a beloved former player, Bob Avellini, at the age of 70. Avellini was drafted by the Bears in the sixth round of the 1975 draft and went on to become a fierce and tough competitor for the team. During his rookie season, he started four games and continued to start 40 more regular season games over the next three seasons.

One of Avellini’s most memorable moments with the Bears came during the 1977 season when he led the team on an unlikely run to their first postseason appearance in 14 years. The Bears described him as a fierce competitor who was best known for this accomplishment.

After being released by the Bears during the 1984 season, Avellini finished out the year with the New York Jets before spending time with the Dallas Cowboys during their preseason in 1986. He ultimately retired from football after that year.

The Bears expressed their condolences for Avellini’s passing, recognizing his contributions to their team and his impact on their history. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and remembered as a true competitor who gave his all on and off the field.
