One-of-a-Kind Science and Conservation School Receives Conservation Grant from Disney

Exploring the Power of Science and Conservation: How SCICON is Inspiring Future Generations to Love and Care for Nature

The Outdoor School of Science and Conservation (SCICON), located in the foothills of Tulare County, CA, is a unique educational experience for fifth and sixth graders. Run by the Tulare Office of Education, SCICON teaches students about the importance of science and conservation through hands-on activities and immersion in nature.

Dianne Shew, director of SCICON, describes the school as a magical place where students can learn to appreciate and care for the earth. Activities at SCICON include hikes of varying difficulties, learning about aquatics, and visiting a museum featuring local items and animals. She believes that instilling a love for nature in children will make a positive impact on future generations.

Gavin, a sixth grade student who has attended SCICON, values the opportunity to learn how to better care for the earth and its creatures. He appreciates the fresh mountain air at SCICON and has realized the impact of human actions on the environment. In early 2023, SCICON suffered extensive damage from historic flooding that affected its salamander habitat. However, thanks to a grant from the Disney Conservation Fund, the Friends of SCICON organization was able to aid in restoration efforts.

Disney “VoluntEARS” contributed by helping to clean up the area while grant money was used to restore the salamander habitat. Dianne Shew believes that everyone working together to care for the earth can make a difference for future generations. Gavin agrees with her wholeheartedly and hopes that his experience at SCICON will inspire others to do the same.
