Experimenting with Chemistry: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Meteorologist Sarah Spivey’s Stunning Science Demonstration

Get ready to be amazed as Meteorologist Sarah Spivey takes you through a spectacular science experiment at STEM Academy Nimitz! Watch the video of Sarah’s demonstration and learn how soft and shiny metals react dramatically with water.

In this eye-catching experiment, Sarah explains the science behind the reaction between potassium and water. To conduct this experiment, you will need a small piece of potassium (available on Amazon), a paper towel, and a beaker of water. Remember to wear eye and hand protection before starting.

The steps to complete this experiment are simple:

Step 1: Put on eye and hand protection.

Step 2: Dry a piece of potassium on a paper towel.

Step 3: Place the potassium in a bowl of water and step back.

Step 4: Watch as the potassium reacts explosively in the water.

The science behind this experiment is that when potassium (K) reacts with water (H2O), it forms potassium hydroxide (KOH) and hydrogen gas (H2). This reaction is exothermic, meaning it generates heat. In some cases, the reaction may even cause some of the potassium to catch fire during the experiment.

If you want to witness this exciting science experiment live at your school, fill out the form provided for your chance to have Sarah and David visit your classroom! Winners will be selected randomly for this opportunity. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to learn more about science in action! Copyright 2025 by KSAT – All rights reserved.
