76ers and Magic both interested in Paul George, who has not re-signed with Clippers

Clippers’ Struggles to Retain Paul George: Can They Keep Their Championship Dreams Afloat?

The Clippers have taken the first step in their offseason plans by signing Kawhi Leonard to a three-year, $149.7 million extension, despite receiving a max offer. Leonard opted to take a discount to remain with the team where he wanted to be. However, the next domino in their plans, Paul George, has not yet signed an extension with the team, despite having a player option worth $48.8 million that he is expected to turn down. Negotiations between George and the Clippers are currently at a standstill as other teams show serious interest in him.

According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, two potential suitors for George are the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers. Both teams have the financial means to make a competitive offer to George and are in need of a veteran wing player like him. The Clippers are hesitant to offer George a max deal due to their experience with Leonard and because George will turn 34 this week, which triggers the over-38 rule and limits the contract structure they can offer him.

With already being over the luxury tax entering negotiations with George, re-signing James Harden and potentially Russell Westbrook could be complicated by George’s intended contract demands. The team is hopeful that all four stars will take a discount to play together in Los Angeles, but there is uncertainty surrounding George’s stance on this plan. This uncertainty sets up an intriguing summer for the Clippers as they work towards solidifying their roster for next season.
