Capturing the Intensity of Life: The World Nature Photography Awards Highlight Oceanic Struggle and Promote Sustainability Efforts

The World Nature Photography Awards recently announced a winner for a dramatic photo of two gannets fighting for a fish off Scotland’s Shetland Islands. Tracey Lund, the winning photographer, captured this intense moment while on vacation using a DSLR camera in a waterproof housing that she lowered into the sea.

The photograph was selected from thousands of submissions and received a $1,000 prize. Lund’s image highlights the challenges faced by these birds as they compete for food in the vast ocean. The World Nature Photography Awards included various categories such as animal portraits, plants and fungi, invertebrate, amphibian, reptile, and mammal behavior.

In addition to promoting photography and supporting the planet, the awards also planted a tree for each entry to the competition. According to Adrian Dinsdale, co-founder of WNPAs, this initiative highlights how photography can influence people to see the world differently and change their habits for the planet’s benefit. Ivan Pedretti from Italy won the category of Planet Earth’s landscapes and environments with a magical photo of winter in Stokksnes, Iceland.

The CNN editorial series Call to Earth has partnered with Rolex’s Perpetual Planet initiative to raise awareness about key sustainability issues and inspire positive action. Together they aim to educate people on important environmental challenges facing our planet and provide solutions that can make a positive impact on our future.
