The Alamo Heights girls’ golf team has once again claimed victory in Class 5A, winning the UIL 5A state championship for the third time in four years. This year, the Mules secured the title by just four strokes, finishing with a total score of 601 over two days of competition at Legacy Hills Golf Club on Tuesday.
Julia Vollmer, a commit to Abilena Christian University, led the team with a two-over-par 146 and now holds three state championships within the Mules program. As she reflected on her experience at the state tournament, Vollmer shared that being in the last group on the 18th hole each year and receiving hugs from her teammates has created lasting memories for her. The victory was emotional for Vollmer and her teammates, with tears of joy and bittersweet feelings as they celebrated their success but also faced the reality of parting ways as seniors.
Kat Salisbury, a commit to the University of St. Andrews, expressed similar emotions about their win. She highlighted how fulfilling it was to achieve their goal and how strong their bond had grown throughout their journey together as a team. Alamo Heights previously won the state title in 2021, 2023 and now in 2024, with a runner-up finish in 2022 by just one stroke.
Head coach Brent McCuiston praised his team’s accomplishment, noting that their third state championship places them among the elite in girls’ high school golf. Looking ahead, McCuiston expressed hope for continued success in future seasons. For more information on this story and other sports coverage visit our Big Game Coverage page.
