Yuquot: The Coastal Community Leading the Way in Clean Energy Development with Wave Energy

Yuquot, a traditional home of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation (MMFN) located on Nootka Island in British Columbia, Canada, is set to become a leader in innovation and clean energy development. The MMFN is working with a consortium of partners from across Canada, including CalWave, to reclaim their land and build a new microgrid for energy independence using the energetic North Pacific waves.

The project at Yuquot is funded by a grant from TD Bank Group and the Clean Energy in Rural and Remote Communities Program within Natural Resources Canada. As part of this project, CalWave has been chosen as the technology provider for the MMFN’s wave energy project. With its proven track record, CalWave has secured four R&D contracts from the DOE Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) and has already demonstrated its first open-ocean system offshore of San Diego, California.

The feasibility and design phase of the project is currently underway to collect necessary information for the MMFN to make an informed decision on full project buildout. Azar Kamran, CEO of the MMFN, expressed his desire to establish Yuquot as a leader in innovation in community building and clean energy development. The successful completion of this project may serve as a blueprint for other coastal communities along the North American Pacific Coast and beyond.
