Yale Establishes New Department of Biomedical Informatics & Data Science

Yale School of Medicine Elevates Biomedical Informatics Department to Full-Fledged Status

In a major development, the Yale Corporation has approved the transition of the Section of Biomedical Informatics & Data Science at Yale School of Medicine (YSM) to the Department of Biomedical Informatics & Data Science (BIDS). This move recognizes the significant growth and achievements of BIDS under the leadership of Lucila Ohno-Machado, who joined YSM in 2022 as an expert in privacy-enhancing technologies and a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

Since joining YSM, Ohno-Machado has recruited top faculty members in the field, leading to a department that comprises 12 ladder-track faculty, 13 research-track faculty, and 40 secondary faculty. These talented individuals have received numerous awards and recognition from professional societies and national funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

BIDS has excelled in research, education, and services under Ohno-Machado’s leadership. The department has secured substantial grant funding for its clinical data organization initiatives and is focused on developing AI solutions to address health disparities. With this newfound recognition as a full department within YSM, BIDS will continue to grow its reputation nationally while positioning YSM as a leader in AI in medicine.
