West Nile Fever Outbreak: 48 Cases and 4 Deaths in Nigeria as Virus Transmitted through Mosquito Bites

The virus that is causing the outbreak of West Nile fever in individuals has resulted in 48 confirmed cases and 4 deaths, as reported by the Ministry of Health. The virus is transmitted through infected mosquitoes that first bite birds before spreading it to animals and humans. Although most cases of West Nile fever are mild and resolve on their own, some individuals may experience more severe symptoms such as neurological complications like meningitis, acute encephalitis, or acute flaccid paralysis.

Individuals with weakened immune systems, cancer patients, infants, and the elderly are at a higher risk of developing severe symptoms. However, it’s important to note that only mosquito-transmitted bites can transmit the virus. It is not transmitted through animals or person-to-person contact. Unfortunately, there currently no vaccine available for humans to protect against West Nile fever. While there is a vaccine available for horses, this does not provide any protection to humans.

Treatment for West Nile fever is limited to managing symptoms and patients may receive intravenous treatments to boost their immune system. Preventative measures such as using mosquito repellents, window nets, and appropriate clothing can help reduce the risk of mosquito bites. Reporting areas with high mosquito activity to health authorities can also be helpful in controlling the spread of the virus.

Emergency room visits may be necessary for individuals experiencing prolonged fever, persistent vomiting, lack of urination, rapid breathing, decreased consciousness, light sensitivity or severe headaches following a mosquito bite. These symptoms may indicate a more serious complication of West Nile fever that requires immediate medical attention.

It’s important for individuals to take preventive measures to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes and seek medical attention if they suspect they have been exposed to the virus.
