Vietnam and Russia Unite on Nuclear Science and Technology Research Center Project

Vietnam and Russia are teaming up on a project to develop the Nuclear Science and Technology Research Center, which will include a new 10 MW research reactor. The goal of this project is to produce radioactive pharmaceuticals for cancer treatment and diagnosis, as well as irradiate silicon to create semiconductor materials for chip production.

In late June, the General Director of Rosatom and the Minister of Science and Technology in Vietnam signed a memorandum of understanding outlining the implementation plan for the project. They agreed on cooperation methods to effectively build and operate the center, which is expected to be located in Long Khanh City, Dong Nai.

The Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute is leading the development of this project and has established specialized groups in various areas related to nuclear science and technology research. These teams are working together to ensure safe and efficient operation of the research reactor, which will significantly increase production capacity compared to current capabilities.

This collaboration represents a significant step forward in Vietnam’s nuclear energy development policy. It aligns with global efforts by several countries around the world to harness nuclear energy resources for peaceful purposes and support their development goals.

To further enhance its capabilities in nuclear science and technology research, the Ministry of Science and Technology has requested assistance from Rosatom in training staff to operate the research reactor. This partnership aims to strengthen Vietnam’s position as a leader in nuclear science and technology research applications.
