Verizon-ADOT and MAG pilot program awarded for innovation in transportation technology

V2X Technology Takes Center Stage in Emerging Trends and Technologies Category for Transportation Systems Management and Operations Award

Verizon Public Sector has been recognized for their innovative work with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the Maricopa Association of Governments in a Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) Award in the Emerging Trends and Technologies category. The pilot program, which took place from December 2021 to May 2022, tested a new vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology in Maricopa County, Arizona.

The goal of the pilot project was to explore the use of V2X capabilities to send time-sensitive safety information between vehicles on Arizona’s interstate and state highway systems. Susan Anderson, Systems Technology Group Manager at ADOT’s Transportation Systems Management and Operations division, stated that this initiative aimed to ensure critical safety notices could be efficiently and promptly delivered to drivers. This collaborative effort between Verizon Public Sector, ADOT, and MAG demonstrated the potential of V2X technology to transform communication between state and local governments and drivers nationwide.

During the program, Verizon Public Sector virtualized ADOT’s roadside units (RSUs), devices that collect and transmit traffic data, and utilized the public Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC) infrastructure to enhance the communication of real-time traffic information to drivers. TJ Fox, Senior Vice President of Industrial IoT and Automotive at Verizon Business, stated that this TSMO award demonstrates the potential of V2X technology to transform communication between state and local governments and drivers nationwide.

The pilot program’s success highlights how V2X technology can improve safety on our roads by allowing vehicles to interact with transportation infrastructure. For more details about this innovative initiative visit Verizon Public Sector’s website.
