Uvalde mayor resigns suddenly due to health concerns not disclosed

Uvalde Mayor Resigns Amid Scrutiny Over Robb Elementary Shooting Response

Uvalde, Texas mayor Cody Smith has resigned from his position due to undisclosed health issues, just weeks before a City Council meeting on the Robb Elementary shooting report. Smith, who was elected following the 2022 massacre at Robb Elementary School where a teenage gunman killed 19 students and two teachers, had focused his platform on helping the city recover from the tragedy. However, he announced his resignation on Monday, effective immediately, citing the need to focus on his health.

The exit of Smith comes as Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez also resigned earlier this month, with his resignation taking effect on April 6th. The city officials have faced scrutiny for their response to the shooting, with reports highlighting failures in the initial response. With the two-year anniversary of the shooting approaching next month, tensions in the community remain high. The city of Uvalde continues to grapple with the aftermath of the tragic event and the need for effective leadership and support for the affected families.

Mayor Pro-Tem Everardo Zamora will serve in Smith’s place until a new mayor is elected on November 5th. Community members, including parents of victims, have expressed disappointment in Smith’s resignation. There was hope that he would work towards justice and accountability for the tragedy. Despite this setback, Uvalde continues to fight towards healing and recovery from this devastating event.
