Uvalde Mayor Steps Down Due to Health Concerns Following Controversial 2022 School Shooting Report – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Uvalde Mayor Pete Smith Resigns Amid Health Concerns and Controversial School Shooting Report

Uvalde Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez has announced his resignation, effective April 6, leaving the small Texas city without its top law enforcement officer just weeks after an independent report cleared local officers of any wrongdoing in the May 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting. The report, authored by private investigator Jesse Prado, was commissioned by the city and defended the actions of local officers who waited over an hour to confront the teen gunman armed with an AR-15-style weapon.

Smith’s announcement came a day after the controversial report was presented to the Uvalde City Council, prompting eruptions of anger from victims’ families and community members. Smith said in a statement that he needed to focus on his health and thanked the Uvalde community for its support during his ongoing recovery from recent “unexpected health issues.” He did not elaborate on what those issues were.

The decision comes just days before a meeting of the city council was expected to discuss Prado’s findings in a private session. Officials had postponed last week’s meeting with concerns for Smith’s health. It is unclear when Smith will officially step down as mayor or who will replace him.
