Uvalde Mayor Steps Down Due to Health Concerns Following Controversial Report on 2022 School Shooting – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Uvalde Mayor Cody Smith and Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez Resign Amidst Controversy Over School Shooting Response

Uvalde Mayor Cody Smith resigned on Monday, citing health reasons for his decision to step down from his position. Smith expressed gratitude to the community for their support during his recovery from recent health issues, although he did not provide details on his condition. The resignation comes as Uvalde continues to grapple with the aftermath of one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.

The report commissioned by the city defending the actions of local law enforcement during the Robb Elementary School shooting was presented at a city council meeting that was postponed due to concerns for Smith’s health. The report exonerated Uvalde officers following a botched response that resulted in 21 fatalities. Prior to Smith’s resignation, Uvalde Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez announced his departure, effective April 6. The city’s report found no wrongdoing by local officers who delayed confronting the armed gunman during the school shooting.

The report, conducted by private investigator Jesse Prado, was met with backlash from victims’ families and community members during a city council meeting where the findings were presented. Prado conducted the investigation independently and was compensated $97,000 for his services. The departures of both the mayor and police chief come as Uvalde continues to grapple with the aftermath of one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.
