Urgent Call to Invest in Science and Technology: Nobel Prize Winners Urge Argentina to Revisit Its Policies

As the world faces unprecedented challenges, a group of scientists and researchers from around the globe are urging Argentina to reconsider its stance on science and technology. In a letter addressed to President Mauricio Macri, they express their concerns about the impact of recent government measures on Argentina’s scientific sectors.

The National Agency for the Promotion of Research, Technological Development, and Innovation (ANID) has condemned the termination of labor contracts and cuts made by the government in the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET). The agency is calling for “reincorporation now” as it believes that everyone in this field is needed to help Argentina navigate these challenges.

The letter signed by over 60 Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry, Economics, Medicine, and Physics warns that Argentina’s scientific sectors are at risk of falling off a dangerous precipice. They urge the government to restore constrained budgets and recognize the importance of investing in science and technology as a means to promote economic and social progress.

The authors stress that cutting research programs and reducing student numbers will destroy a system that has taken years to build. They also mention that over 50,000 national public administration workers have been laid off during this time, with another 70,000 contracts not being renewed. The letter emphasizes that without strong infrastructure for science, there will be no technological advancement or workforce training possible.
