Unprecedented Earthquakes Devastate Taiwan in Recent History: A Look at the Tragic Impact

In recent history, Taiwan has experienced several devastating earthquakes that have left a significant impact on the island. In 1935, the Hsinchu Taichung earthquake struck near the west coast of Taiwan, resulting in the tragic loss of over 3,200 lives and leaving more than 12,000 individuals injured. The disaster resulted in tens of thousands of homes being demolished and made this earthquake one of the most devastating globally.

Fast forward to 1999 when Taiwan was struck by a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6, resulting in a death toll of over 2,400 people. This earthquake was one of the most catastrophic events in the island’s history as more than 100,000 homes were either damaged or destroyed. Wednesday’s earthquake was noted as the strongest since this devastating event.

In 2016, southern Taiwan experienced a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that caused a 17-story building in the city of Tainan to collapse and resulted in at least 116 tragic deaths. The epicenter of this earthquake was in Taiwan’s central mountain range with Tainan being the most severely impacted area. The disaster resulted in a disruption of water supply to many individuals and caused a significant chasm in the ground.
