University of Houston scholars win first place in national government finance competition

UH Mānoa Shidler College of Business Takes Home First Place in National Government Case Challenge

Recently, a team of three students from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa Shidler College of Business won a national government case challenge. The team, consisting of You-Fan Chai, Manying Huang, and Alaina Rhoades, dedicated several months to analyzing data for the city of Denver, Colorado, ultimately developing a “Citizen-Centric Report” for the location. This competition provided a valuable learning experience for the students, pushing them to challenge their skills in information gathering and analysis.

The team utilized tools like Canva and CapCut to make their report, presentation, and video visually appealing. Chai emphasized the importance of participating in competitions like this not just for the prize but for personal development through the learning experience. The Government Finance Case Challenge was hosted by the National Association of Government Accountants (AGA), which highlighted the significance of government accountability and transparency. By showcasing how data is transformed into information for citizens and promoting careers in government.

Under the guidance of UH Mānoa School of Accountancy Professor Jian Zhou, the team excelled in the competition. Special thanks go to Pamela Young from the AGA-Hawai’i Chapter for her support throughout their journey. Judges evaluated submissions based on criteria such as analysis depth, presentation quality, and creativity. The finalists presented their findings in a video created by themselves mocking a government meeting scenario. This victory marks UH Mānoa’s third win in four years at either the graduate or undergraduate level in government case competitions
