Cowboys excited to watch Trey Lance in preseason

Trey Lance’s Path to Success: Competing for Backup Role Behind Dak Prescott

Trey Lance, the 2021 No. 3 overall pick, has yet to see much action on the field since being acquired by the Cowboys from the 49ers in a fourth-round draft pick before the 2023 season. He missed out on practice reps and was inactive for all 17 games of the season. However, he now has an opportunity to compete with Cooper Rush for the backup role behind Dak Prescott during training camp and preseason.

Despite his limited playing time, executive vice president Stephen Jones expressed excitement about Lance’s potential during rookie minicamp, praising his work ethic and professionalism. The Cowboys are eager to see what he can bring to the table, but they have decided not to exercise the fifth-year option on his contract. This means that Prescott, Rush, and Lance are all scheduled to become free agents in 2025.

If a long-term agreement cannot be reached with Prescott, there is a possibility that Lance could take on the starting quarterback role for the Cowboys in 2025. Heading into preseason, Lance has a lot at stake as he seeks to prove himself as a valuable member of the team after missing out on practice reps and game experience due to injury. In his limited playing time, Lance has shown promise and will be closely watched by fans and coaches alike as he competes for a more prominent role on the team.
