Transforming Waste into Innovation: Paris 2024’s Olympic and Paralympic Village Embraces Eco-Friendly Sustainability Initiatives

The Olympic and Paralympic Village, which will host 24,000 residents during the Paris 2024 Games, has secured contracts worth EUR 1.6 million for cleaning and laundry services from nine social businesses. These companies will play a crucial role in ensuring the cleanliness and hygiene of the living spaces during the events.

In another sustainability initiative, 11,000 chairs for the Aquatic Centre and the La Chapelle Arena have been created using sustainable materials developed as part of the Le Pavé project. This project, initiated by three young entrepreneurs, focuses on transforming plastic waste into innovative materials that can replace traditional materials like cement and virgin plastic. The chairs serve as a testament to the possibilities of eco-friendly production methods.

Halage, an association specializing in training individuals who are marginalized from the workforce, has taken on the task of developing green spaces in the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Village. Their efforts will not only enhance the aesthetics of the village but also contribute to environmental conservation in the urban area.

Women facing life challenges have joined forces with H.A.W.A AU FÉMININ, a company that provides training in fashion-related activities. Together, they have repurposed used textile materials from the Arena Porte de la Chapelle construction site to create unique souvenirs. This initiative not only showcases the creativity and skills of the women involved but also promotes the idea of repurposing materials to reduce waste.

Overall, these initiatives demonstrate how social businesses can contribute to sustainability efforts while providing valuable services to those who need them most.
