Transforming Maternity Care: Inquiry Calls for Complete Overhaul and New Commissioner, While C-Section Babies Need Two Measles Vaccinations, Skydivers Make History in London and Elsewhere

A report from the Birth Trauma Inquiry is calling for a complete transformation of the UK’s maternity and postnatal care systems, as well as the establishment of a new ‘maternity commissioner’ who would directly report to the prime minister. The inquiry gathered over 1,300 harrowing testimonies from women, some of whom described being left in blood-soaked bedding and others whose children suffered life-altering injuries due to medical errors. NHS England chief executive Amanda Pritchard has expressed disappointment in these accounts, stating that such experiences are unacceptable.

In other news, researchers from the University of Cambridge and Fudan University in China have discovered that babies born via C-section may require two measles vaccinations for full protection. Professor Henrik Salje and his team found that a single measles vaccination is significantly less effective in children born through C-section compared to those born vaginally. Meanwhile, two professional skydivers, Marco Furst and Marco Waltenspiel, achieved history by completing the world’s first wingsuit flight through London’s Tower Bridge. The Austrian Red Bull skydivers leaped from a helicopter at 3,000 feet and swooped down to just 35 meters above the River Thames. Other stories covered in this episode include a study linking internet usage to increased wellbeing, Wales becoming the first UK nation to enter the metaverse, and the impact of different sources of sugar on children’s weight. The episode also delves into the decline of classic British insults. Listeners can tune in to this episode on various platforms like Apple, Spotify or other podcast providers.
