Final week, state Sen. President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden, R-Columbia, stated the odds are not excellent on a sports betting bill passing in the Senate this session.

This week, state Rep. Dan Houx, R-Warrensburg, signaled that there may well be a breakthrough quickly. Houx and Sen. Denny Hoskins, R-Warrensburg, each have their personal sports betting bills.

“I’m functioning with Senator Hoskins,” stated Houx. “We had a meeting this week. I’m really optimistic that we’re going to come to agreement to get it carried out. As everyone knows, it is sort of been hinging on Senator Hoskins, so I’m going to retain functioning on. That is exactly where we’re at.”

Hoskins has a bill that would regulate video lottery machines. Houx stated he opposes adding that provision.

“Well I assume the VLT discussion’s off the board,” stated Houx. “We saw what occurred in the Senate final week. It went down in flames. I assume appropriate now it is come down to the costs, the tax price, and producing positive we get what people today want in the state. Everyone desires sports gambling. They do not want – or they haven’t talked about VLTs.”

Many bills to legalize sports betting have been filed this session, such as by Reps. Phil Christofanelli and Dave Griffith, as properly as Sens. Tony Luetkemeyer and Nick Schroer.

Far more than 30 states have legalized sports betting.
