Adverse Reaction to Sea Buckthorn Consumption

The Dangers of Consuming Sea Buckthorn: A Case Study on Tetrodotoxin Poisoning in a 61-Year-Old Man

A 61-year-old man experienced severe symptoms such as a stiff jaw, numb lips, numb tongue, restlessness, difficulty breathing, speaking and moving after giving birth. Doctor Nguyen Sy Manh from the Department of Intensive Care and Poison Control at Bai Chay Hospital stated that the patient was hospitalized in critical condition due to poisoning and received emergency treatment, including gastric lavage and electrolyte balance to detoxify and reduce secretions. The man had mistakenly consumed sea buckthorn, believing it was not harmful as he had consumed it many times before without issue. However, tetrodotoxin found in sea turtles is highly toxic, especially during the breeding season when the toxin is more concentrated. Tetrodotoxin is extremely toxic, stable with heat, and primarily affects the nerves, heart, and digestion. Even a small dose can cause sensory disorders, paralysis, respiratory failure, and potentially death if not treated promptly.

Sea crab should be identified and distinguished accurately before consumption to prevent poisoning as it closely resembles sea buckthorn. There is no specific antidote for tetrodotoxin poisoning; therefore immediate medical attention is crucial if symptoms like numbness or vomiting occur after ingesting sea buckthorn or eggs/meat derived from it. It is essential to recognize the dangers of consuming sea buckthorn and take precautionary measures to avoid poisoning. By raising awareness about the risks associated with sea buckthorn consumption among health professionals and the public alike we can prevent further cases of poisoning and protect public health.
