Taraji P. Henson’s New Children’s Book Encourages Openness About Mental Wellness for All Ages

Taraji P. Henson has long been a vocal advocate for mental wellness, and in a recent interview with PEOPLE, she discussed the importance of this topic in relation to her new children’s book, You Can Be a Good Friend (No Matter What!).

As an actress who works in mental health advocacy, Henson emphasized the need to meet people where they are and help make the journey of life easier for everyone. She co-founded the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation in 2018 in honor of her father, a Vietnam War veteran who passed away in 2005. Through this foundation, Henson aims to continue her father’s legacy of openness about his own struggles with mental health and encourage others to do the same.

Henson not only advocates for mental wellness in her personal life but also incorporates it into her acting career. She shared with PEOPLE that she always considers her character’s mental state while portraying them on screen, recognizing that every character has a hidden struggle affecting their mental health. This approach has changed the way she approaches her work as an actress.

In addition to her professional endeavors, Henson also focuses on mental health in her parenting. She highlighted the significance of vulnerability and asking for help when needed, especially in dealing with trauma. Finding accessible resources and support systems has been crucial in her journey as a parent to her son Marcell, 30.

Overall, Henson’s book aims to spread awareness about mental wellness among children by encouraging open conversation surrounding this important topic. The book is currently available for purchase and continues to advocate for accessible resources and support systems for those struggling with their mental health.
