Report: Panthers have made contact with Stephon Gilmore

Stephon Gilmore: A Second Chance at Victory with the Carolina Panthers?

Stephon Gilmore, a veteran cornerback, is reportedly being considered by the Panthers for a return to the Carolinas. At 33 years old, Gilmore played for Carolina during the latter part of the 2021 season after being traded by the Patriots for a sixth-round pick. During his time with the Panthers, he appeared in nine games with eight starts, recording 16 total tackles and two interceptions.

Gilmore’s stint with the Panthers was brief, as he quickly signed a two-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts in 2022. In that year, he started in all 16 games and recorded 17 total tackles and one interception. In 2023, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys where he also started in all 17 games, playing 94 percent of the team’s defensive snaps.

Gilmore has had an impressive career thus far, having been drafted at No. 10 overall in the 2012 draft. He has played for several teams throughout his career including the Bills, Patriots, Colts and Cowboys. In total, he has played in 165 games and has recorded 140 career passes defensed along with 31 interceptions.

Ranked at No.51 on PFT’s list of top 100 free agents, Gilmore’s potential return to the Panthers could bring a valuable veteran presence to their secondary. With his experience and skill set on board again with this organization may be beneficial for them going forward in terms of defense stability and performance improvement.

It remains to be seen if a deal will come to fruition but it is clear that Gilmore would be an asset if he were to join back up with Carolina once again as a veteran presence would bring stability and mentorship to young players on defense unit
